Brewster Kahle est le co-inventeur du WAIS (wide area information servers) avec Bruce Gilliat. En octobre 2005, il lance l’Open Content Alliance (OPA), rejoint ensuite par de nombreux partenaires (bibliothèques, universités, sociétés informatiques, etc.) pour proposer un projet ouvert de bibliothèque numérique en réponse au projet privé lancé par Google avec Google Book Search. L’objectif de l’OPA est un répertoire libre et multilingue de livres numérisés (essentiellement des livres du domaine public) et de documents multimédia pour consultation et téléchargement sur n’importe quel moteur de recherche. -

(protocole)Le protocole Z39.50 est un standard de communication permettant de chercher et récupérer des informations bibliographiques dans des bases de données en ligne. Il est d’abord utilisé par le WAIS (wide area information servers), un système de recherche lancé au début des années 1990 pour consulter les index de bases de données situées sur des serveurs consultables à distance, avant l’apparition des moteurs de recherche sur le web. La version en cours, définie par la norme ISO 23950:1998 (ISO: Organisation internationale de normalisation), est utilisée par les grands catalogues de bibliothèques consultables sur le web, à commencer par le catalogue en ligne de la Library of Congress.
